Ask an alumnus about their Mandarin year and they rarely start with the textbook. They start with the afternoon: the brush that wouldn’t behave, the tea that cooled while they were concentrating, the Chinese student who laughed with them over a mispronounced tone. The cultural half of the day is not a break from the Study Program. It is the Study Program, wearing different clothes.
The brush is a grammar teacher
Calligraphy 书法 looks like an art class. It is secretly a pronunciation class. To write a character with a brush you must decide, stroke by stroke, where it begins and where it leans — the same decisions your mouth makes with a tone. First tone is a level stroke, drawn slow. Third tone dips before it rises, exactly the way your voice does.
Students who struggle with tones in the morning class often stop struggling after a few afternoons of ink. The hand teaches the ear.

Tea is a conversation engine
A shared pot of tea solves the hardest problem in language learning: having something to talk about with a stranger. The pour, the refusals, the 谢谢 that comes too late — it is all vocabulary with a reason to exist. Nobody prepares a topic. The tea prepares it for you.
The language corner is where it compounds
Once a week, the language corner 语言角 puts you in a room with Chinese students who want to practice English and international students who want to practice Mandarin. The exchange is honest and a little chaotic: half a sentence in one language, the reply in the other, grammar repaired in real friendship.

Why afternoons matter to Applicants
Morning classes build the structure of the language. Afternoons build the willingness to use it — which is what actually decides how far a year in China takes you. When you compare Study Programs, look past the contact hours and ask what the afternoons look like. Ours are painted, poured, and talked through.
The cultural activities run every week alongside core classes. If that combination sounds like your kind of year, the Study Programs on the main page show how the two halves are scheduled.
